Duncan Campbell, 1st Lord Campbell

Duncan Campbell, 1st Lord Campbell Gaelic Donnchadh mac Cailein († 1453 in Lochow, Argyllshire ) was an important figure in Scottish history in the first half of the 15th century and Justiciar of Argyll.

Life

Duncan Campbell was the eldest son of Colin Campbell of Lochow, Lord of Argyll († 1414), known as Colin, the good Knight, and his second wife Mariot Campbell, daughter of John Campbell. His mother was the heiress of Ardscotnish and Glen Orchy. His father received for this marriage between close relatives a dispensation.

After the death of his father was Duncan Campbell director of the Campbells of Loch Awe. In 1445 Duncan Campbell was appointed by King James II to Lord Campbell.

In his first marriage was Duncan Campbell with Lady Marjorie Stewart ( † 1432 ), a daughter of Robert Stewart, 1st Duke of Albany and Margaret Graham, Countess of Menteith, married. The joint compound was a son, Archibald Campbell, Master of Campbell (1431-1440), out.

His second wife he married in 1439 Lady Margaret Stewart of Ardgowan († 1442 ). Her father, James Stewart of Kilbride (c. 1374 ), was the illegitimate son of the Scottish king Robert III. From the joint connecting four children:

  • Colin Campbell, Lord of Glenorchy and Breadalbane († 1475 )
  • Neil Campbell
  • Duncan Campbell, Lord of Kilmichael
  • Archibald Campbell
