Dundee Contemporary Arts
The Dundee Contemporary Arts ( DCA for short ) is a contemporary art museum in Dundee, Scotland. The DCA opened in 1999, and in addition to spaces for temporary exhibitions, among others, two cinemas and the Visual Research Centre of the University of Dundee. The DCA is considered one of the most successful museum buildings of the 1990s in the UK.
History
The idea of a center for art exhibitions, the current positions of art with creative activities for the residents of Dundee combines, and the graduates of the local Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design (now a faculty of the University of Dundee) provides a first non-university showroom was discussed in Dundee since the mid- 1980s.
Mid -1990s, ran the City Council of Dundee, the University of Dundee and the newly established company " Dundee Contemporary Arts" a partnership to implement the plans into action. 1995 acquired the City Council a land with a dilapidated garage and a brick storage building near the university and the Dundee Repertory Theatre. The proposed building site was very narrow and had a height difference of 8 m.
An architectural competition for the new building of the DCA in 1996 won the British architect Richard Murphy. Condition of the competition was the preservation of the brick warehouse, with room for a large and a small gallery for temporary exhibits, two movie theaters with a total of 300 seats, a graphics workshop, a cafe, information center, as well as for the Visual Research Centre of the University should be established. In addition to the administrative offices for the DCA itself and living spaces for gas- animal artists, the building complex should also take the management of the Department of Art and Preservation of Dundee City Council. The shell with a floor space of over 5,000 m² was built from July 1996 to March 1998, and officially opened in March 1999. The building cost £ 6.1 million, of which 5.4 million pounds were taken from the National Lottery Fund, which the Scottish Arts Council approved.
