Dunedin ( dəni ː dɪŋ ) is a city in Pinellas County in the U.S. state of Florida with 35 321 inhabitants ( 2010).

The city's name is derived from the Scottish name of Edinburgh Dùn eideann.

Geography

Dunedin is located on a peninsula. The city is bordered to the south and east of Clearwater, west of the city lies the Gulf of Mexico and the north lies the CDP Palm Harbor. The city area includes the coastal islands Honeymoon and Caladesi Iceland Iceland with their respective state parks. Dunedin is located approximately 25 km west of Tampa.

History

The first known landowners in the area of present-day Dunedin was 1852 Richard L. Garrison, but the first name of the settlement was Jonesboro. 1882 brought two merchants of Scottish origin with the U.S. Postal Service to rename the post office Dunedin. Finally, the city got this name. It was incorporated in 1899 as a Town and in 1925 as a City.

The early settlers of the town lived on the cultivation of cotton and lemons. Later, the city developed into a major seaport, including the construction of a shipyard contributed. Once most of the sailing ships of Florida were registered here. The construction of the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad was also important for the development of the city. In Atlantic Coast Line Depot on Main Street is now a museum housed, which is supported by the Dunedin Historical Society and artifacts from the city's history shows. The JO Douglas House and the Andrews Memorial Chapel were entered in the National Register of Historic Places.

The market research firm ACNielsen operates a data center here since 1972 and is one of the largest employers in the city. The Professional Golfers Association here had its headquarters from 1945 until 1962.

Demographics

According to the 2010 census, the then 35 321 inhabitants distributed to 21,113 households. The population density was 1,313 inh. / Km ². 91.6 % of the population were white, 3.3% African American, 0.3% Native American and 1.6% Asian Americans. 1.4% were members of other ethnic groups and 1.8% in different ethnic groups. 5.9% of the population were Hispanic or Latino.

In 2010, children under the age of 18 and 41.1 % of all households lived in 18.0 % of all households with persons at least 65 years. 52.7 % of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring ). The average size of a household was 1.98 persons and the average family size is 2.63 people.

16.5% of the population were younger than 20 years, 18.3% were 20-39 years old, 28.9 % were 40-59 years old and 36.1% were at least 60 years old. The median age was 51 years. 46.4 % of the population were male and 53.6 % female.

The average annual income was $ 48,420, while 9.3 % of the population lived below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 92.20 % of the population spoke Spanish 3.12% and 4.68% had a different mother tongue.

Traffic

Dunedin is on U.S. Highway 19 (SR 595 ) and the Florida State Roads 580 and 586 crosses. The nearest airport is St. Petersburg- Clearwater International Airport (15 km south).

Education

In Dunedin there are six public schools, three of which are Elementary Schools ( Dunedin, Garrison -Jones, San Jose), one middle school and one high school. Add to this the Athenian Academy of Pinellas and Academie Davinci and two private schools ( Anchor Academy and Dunedin Academy) and a Roman Catholic school ( Our Lady of Lourdes ).

According to Census data, 86.6 % of residents have a high school degree, 22.4% a bachelor and 7.1% have a doctorate or have an even higher degree.

Crime

The crime rate in 2010 was 253 points ( U.S. average: 266 points ) within the average range. There were 15 rapes, 19 robberies, 74 injuries, 208 burglaries, 915 thefts, 37 car thefts and six arsons.
