Duntarvie Castle

Duntarvie Castle is a manor house near the Scottish village in the unitary authority Winchburgh West Lothian. In 1971 the building was added to the Scottish lists of monuments in the highest category A monument. Furthermore, it is classified as a Scheduled monument.

History

In 1588 James Durham received the rights to the lands of Duntarvie. In this he was probably built around 1590 Duntarvie Castle. During the 17th century an extension was added. Later the family Hopes acquired the property and incorporated it to be located north of Hopetoun House. Since the 1840s, the building stands empty and fell into disrepair in the following rapidly.

Description

Duntarvie is located approximately two kilometers north of Winchburgh off the M9. The four-story elongated main building was originally built symmetrically. It was only later added five storey tower broke the symmetry. The masonry consists of rubble stone. On the north side emerges a stair tower. Today, the masonry is partially damaged and destroyed the roof. The gables are working as a stepped gable. On the ground floor vaulted ceilings are retracted. From there, a staircase leads to the upstairs hall.
