Dương Thu Hương ( * 1947 in the province of Thái Bình in northern Vietnam ) is a Vietnamese writer.

Life

She fought in the Vietnam war for the liberation of their country, but was later excluded from that because of their criticism of the Communist Party. She takes a humanistic position and calls for the observance of human rights.

Your stage plays, stories and novels are largely banned in Vietnam; it is, however, very well known in their own country and was widely read in front of their publication ban. Because of their criticism of the government and in her novels to be read system-critical stories she was sentenced to a seven-month prison sentence in 1991. The official charge was leaking state secrets, so the spread of her novels was meant abroad. By 2007, she was not allowed to leave Vietnam and now lives in France.

She received the 1991 Prix Femina and the UNESCO Literature Prize.
