History

The DuPage County was formed in 1839. It was named after a French merchant family who lived in Kaskaskia in the 18th century.

Until 1867 the county seat was Naperville. Only then it was Wheaton.

When the first settlers of European origin settled here, they changed the landscape. They cut down the trees because they needed the wood for their homes and to take action. The natural flora has been removed to plant corn and vegetables. These changes destroyed the natural habitat of the forest animals that required the Indians to live and to act. As the new settlers also fenced their fields, the Indians were no longer as free as before.

Encroachments of the Indians to the new colonists in DuPage County are not narrated, but the colonists fled in 1832 from an attack of the Indians to Fort Dearborn in Chicago, and returned only after a month back when near her Fort Payne was built. The fort stood on the site of present-day training course at North Central College. 1833 signed the remaining Indians signed a purchase agreement in which they sold their land. The first sawmills were built, then came flour mills, inns and horse-changing stations for travelers. 1859, the first railway connection to the Galena & Chicago Union was built, so that simple trips to Chicago and Galena were possible.
