Duraisamy Simon Lourdusamy

Duraisamy Simon Cardinal Lourdusamy ( born February 5, 1924 Kalleri village, Tamil Nadu, India) is an emeritus Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

He was ordained priest on 21 December 1951. At the age of 38 years Lourdusamy was appointed bishop and entrusted with the task of a suffragan bishop of Bangalore. He received his episcopal consecration on August 22, 1962 Archbishop Ambrose Rayappan. Six years later Lourdusamy took over as head of the Archdiocese of Bangalore and moved on as archbishop.

Early 1970s that Pope Paul VI. Monsignor Lourdusamy together with a native of Benin, Archbishop Bernardin Gantin to the Roman Curia and commissioned two priests serving in management jobs in the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples. While Gantin was admitted to the College of Cardinals in 1977, Lourdusamy had to wait for this honor until 1985. In the same year Pope John Paul II appointed the Indian prelates appointed Prefect of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches. In this role Lourdusamy was commissioned until 1991 for the relationship of Rome to the connected with the Holy See local Churches of the Eastern rite.

Cardinal Lourdusamy lives relatively withdrawn in his Roman apartment near St. Peter's Basilica and only occurs occasionally in church major events in appearance.
