Durango

Durango is a Mexican state with 123,181 km ² and 1,632,934 inhabitants. The Spanish conquistadores named it after the Spanish city of Durango in the Basque Vizcaya.

Durango consists mainly of the wild mountain country of the western Sierra Madre. The capital city of Victoria de Durango, often abbreviated to Durango, received its official name after the first Mexican president, Guadalupe Victoria, who came from the state of Durango. Besides the capital, especially the cities of Gómez Palacio and Lerdo Ciudad are significant. Overall, this state, which accounts for about 6.3 % of the area of Mexico, 39 municipios.

In colonial times, the area was administered together with Chihuahua as Nueva Vizcaya.
