Durotriges

The Durotriges were a Celtic tribe or rather a loose association of small Celtic groups in the southwest of present-day England. On their area were some oppida as Hod Hill, Hambledon, South Cadbury and Maiden Castle. From about 100 BC import goods from the Mediterranean in the field of Durotriges are observed. Even in Celtic times they coined coins, however, bear no inscriptions, so that no ruler names have survived. Against the Roman conquest, they should have done a fierce resistance. Various oppida in their field show traces of fierce fighting. In Roman Britain the Durotriges to a Civitas were. Its main town, were in Roman times Durnovaria ( Dorchester (Dorset) ) and later next Lindinis, suggesting that these Civitas was divided into two parts.
