Durrow, County Laois

Durrow ( Irish: Darú, older Darmhagh nDuach Ua ) is a town in County Laois in the central inland of the Republic of Ireland.

History

The earliest mention of Durrow (then Dervagh ) dates from the year 546, as a place of there possibly founded by Columba of Iona Monastery. The burning of a local church has survived from 1155. Mid-13th century Durrow received (under the name Deverald ) the right, on Thursdays a market and in the third week of July to hold a fair. The beginning of the 18th century " English country house " style built Durrow Castle is a luxury hotel since 1998.

The Book of Durrow is in no way associated with Durrow in County Laois.

Presence

Durrow located in the south of County Laois, near to County Kilkenny, on the River Erkina, the 1.5 km east connects the city with the River Nore. In Census 2006 775 people lived in Durrow. The place is located about 30 km south of Portlaoise on the National Road N8 Portlaoise to Cork City. The N77 connects Durrow with Kilkenny Town and the N10 towards Waterford.
