Dusky flying fox

The Percy Iceland Flying-fox ( Pteropus brunneus ) is an extinct Flughundart that was endemic to the Australian island Percy Iceland.

Description

The Percy Iceland Flying Fox reached a length of 210 mm, a forearm length of 118 mm and a weight of 200 grams. The ear length was two inches. The coat was almost everywhere quite short. The wing membrane between the thighs ( Interfemoral - skin) was very narrow in the middle and concealed by the fur. The hairless ears were triangular and pointed and blunt. At the head, back, chest and belly fur was yellowish brown. On the neck there was a little brighter. The wings were black gray.

Status

The Percy Iceland Flying-fox is known only from the holotype, which was collected in 1859 on the island located north-east of Queensland Percy Iceland. The taxon is listed in the 1992 IUCN Red List and the Australian Endangered Species Protection Act to be extinct. However, there is to date unclear whether the type of Australian origin and there is doubt as to the validity, especially the Percy Iceland Flying-fox Pteropus scapulatus the type looks very similar.
