Slate Gray Astrild ( Euschistospiza cinereovinacea )

The slate gray Astrild ( Euschistospiza cinereovinacea ) is an African species of the family of finches. For the type two subspecies are expected.

Description

The slate gray Astrild reaches a body length of about 11.5 inches. The male is slate gray to brownish slate gray. The rear rump and upper tail-coverts are dark red, the tail is black. On the sides of the body it is dark wine red with small white drops stains. The females are similar to males but have a lighter gray throat and are less dark on the body bottom.

Distribution and habitat

The slate gray Astrild comes in Africa in two isolated populations. The nominate E. c. cinereovinacea lives in the highlands of Angola, the subspecies E. c. graueri in the highlands on the western shore of Lake Tanganyika. The latter range extends over Burundi and Rwanda to the south-west of Uganda. Its altitudinal distribution extends to altitudes of 2,200 meters. He is present there in the grass interspersed with bushes of highland savannah. His life is not been studied insufficiently. The very shy bird lives mainly in pairs or in small groups of three to four birds.

Attitude

Slate Grey Astrilde came only in the 1960s for the first time to Europe. The present affirmed succeeded in 1965. Detailed entertainment experiences do not exist for this species. It is assumed that similar slate gray Astrilde need as belonging to the same genus Dybowskiastrilden for their well -being well-structured and equipped with plants aviaries.
