Dust in the Wind

Dust in the Wind is a song by American rock band Kansas. It was first published in 1977 on the album Point of Know Return, and in 1978 released as a single. The song reached in February 1978 Place 6 on the Billboard Hot 100, making him the most successful hit of Kansas. A known live version of the piece can be found on the 1978 released album Two for the Show.

The piece is a really atypical for the band Kansas rock ballad. The single was soon sold over half a million copies, reaching gold status in the United States.

The song was by Kerry Livgren - the guitarist and keyboardist of the band - written after he had read a book on the poetry of Native Americans. He was inspired by the line " For all we are is dust in the wind" ( " Overall, we are just dust in the wind "). This line is reflected in the refrain of the song. The theme is often varied in the song, for example in the form of "Just a drop of water in a endless sea" ( "Just a drop of water in an endless sea "). The song consists of three verses. Another verse was written but never published.

Music

The basic key of the piece is in A minor. On the original recording of the song is accompanied by two guitars. The technique used here, Travis picking calls; this is a finger picking with alternating bass.

After each of the three stanzas of the chorus follows. After the last verse of the chorus is recited twice, the last repetition is varied slightly. After the chorus after the second verse follows an instrumental part with a characteristic violin melody. The violin can be heard also in the following verse and the following chorus, after the first part of the song accompanied only by guitar.

A characteristic feature of the piece is also the intro, which is repeated in the instrumental part and at the end of the piece. The upper voice is repeated every three cycles, while the chord diagram always goes over four bars. By this metric displacement creates the typical chord progression:

Sarah Brightman coverte the piece on her album Eden, published in 1999. Dust was also gecovert in the Wind, among others, the Scorpions, of the Eagles, Mägo de Oz, Metalium, Eric Benét, Gabriel & Dresden, Keren Ann and Melanie. From the Chilean punk rock band Los Mox! There is a Spanish version. Furthermore, there is an instrumental version of the jazz guitarist Bernie Williams.

Dust in the Wind is in the movie Old School - We can absolutely burn anything that was released in 2003, sung by Will Ferrell and is repeatedly heard in the TV series Highlander. Also in the episode Fat man and little boy from the Simpsons series, the original version of the piece is used. In the movie Final Destination 5, the song points to the future accidents. In the 2013 released movie sources of life, the other a branch in post-war Germany generational history, Dust in the Wind, a kind of musical theme.
