Düsum Khyenpa, 1st Karmapa Lama

Düsum Khyenpa (pronounced [t ʰ Ysum c ʰ e ⁿ pa]; Tibetan in Wylie transliteration: dus gsum mkhyen pa * 1110 in eastern Tibet, † 1193 ) is the first Lama in the Incarnation series of the Karmapa and the founder of the Tibetan Buddhist order, Karma Kagyu.

Life

Düsum Khyenpa was at the age of 20 years a monk. He studied with well-known masters of his time, including Chapa Chokyi Sengge (1109-1169), a logician, and Patsab Lotsawa Drakpa Nyima ( 1055 -? ), Who translated many texts into Tibetan Madhyamaka and a master of Prasangika was Madhyamaka philosophy.

At the age of 30 he became a student of Gampopa. He followed the line of the Kadampa and studied the sutras, which is considered in the Karma Kagyu as particularly important. In addition, he also received teachings from Rechungpa and other students of Milarepa.

At the age of 55 years ( 1164 ) he founded a monastery in Kampo Nenang. With 60 ( 1169 ), he founded the monastery in Litang Panphuk (see also Kham ). With 76 ( 1185 ), he founded an important seat of the Karma Kagyu at Karma Guen. At the age of 80 years ( 1189 ) headquartered Tsurphu. He made predictions about the future Karmapa he rakes (1148-1218) confided to his chief disciple Drogon, which was also the next main lineage holder of the Karma Kagyu. Düsum Khyenpa died at the age of 84 years. Successors were Drogon rake and Pomdrakpa ( 1170-1249 ).

Other students were Taklung Tashi Pal, founder of the Kagyu Taklung, Tsangpa Gyara, founder of the Drukpa Kagyu and Khadampa Deshek, founder of Katok Nyingma.
