DVB-SH

DVB -SH (from English Digital Video Broadcasting - satellite services to handheld devices, to German Digital Video Broadcasting via satellite for handheld devices ) is a transmission standard, can be received with the digital broadcast programs on small and / or mobile devices ( Mobile TV / Mobile TV). DVB -SH based on the sister DVB-H standard and ETSI SDR. A similar technology is used in S- DMB. The system consists of geostationary satellites, in urban centers, these are still supported with repeaters.

This is a new broadcasting standard for processing satellite signals for mobile devices. As with normal satellite reception must be a direct "sight" to the satellite consist. This complicates the reception indoors, but are in the metropolitan areas for DVB-H transmitter ready. The satellite provides rural regions.

Technology

DVB-SH using frequencies in the S-band ( channel between 2170 MHz and 2200 MHz). The transfer technique involves addition of an error correction called Turbo Coding for Forward Error Correction with an opportunity to involve terrestrial repeaters in the satellite transmissions. Additional terrestrial transmitters in the DVB -SH mode to close resulting gaps.

Current status

The ESA has given 2006 as part of the ARTES - 4 program the first S- band repeater for satellite in order

According to a report of the Germany radio, a satellite is already at Alcatel been commissioned, which is scheduled to end in 2009 with the transfer of around 12 to 20 channels allowed. How many radio programs such as Find 128 kbps on a channel number has not yet been officially announced.

Based on the 30 MHz bandwidth of the S- band ( 2170-2200 MHz) can be estimated based on the capacity of the Shannon theorem. It can therefore be assumed that at least 1 Mbits / MHz. The 30 MHz bandwidth correspond almost exactly that of a single DVB -S / DVB -S2 transponder of satellite television in the Ku- band. At 30 Mbit / s - should the FEC rate (error rate of protection ) should be identical to the one used at the reception via satellite dish - be assumed that about 234 kinds of radio programs with 128 kbps, which the FM quality would far exceed with current compression methods. If indeed TV programs are offered, however, the radio program number is drastically reduced, or it must alternatively be sent with extremely low TV resolution of 320 × 240 or even less pixels and his statements in stuttering low frame rate to bandwidth to save.

The satellites are needed to position the end of 2008 at 10 degrees East, Eutelsat and Astra. He will distribute them in vehicles ( even inside buildings ) and receivers from 2009, together with terrestrial repeaters those sold under the name Solaris radio, video and data services for mobile devices.

On 6 October 2009 started at the University of Erlangen- Nuremberg, the first test program in the DVB -SH standard in Germany.
