DVD Forum

The DVD Forum ( without a hyphen, as organization proper name ) is a voluntary association of more than 230 companies that it has set itself the target to match industry standards for the entertainment and the IT industry in terms of the DVD. This industry association was founded in 1995 under the name DVD Consortium and named in 1997 for the DVD Forum by. The seat of the DVD Forum in Tokyo.

The DVD Forum has received over the years by the various stakeholders, a very " bureaucratic structure " Especially with recordable DVD formats, there are such great interest conflicts among device manufacturers and the entertainment industry that the equipment manufacturers often went their own ways. :

  • The first case occurred in the DVD -R and DVD -RW. On both DVD formats wanted some equipment manufacturers have cheaper recordable DVD formats and developed the DVD R and DVD RW. This two DVD formats was not a consensus in the DVD forum, so that their market establishment on the DVD RW Alliance was made.
  • The second case occurred with the development of the DVD successor. While the DVD forum for this HD DVD provides, see some device manufacturers for this Blu- ray Disc as promising. The supporters of the Blu- Ray disc are organized in the Blu -ray Disc Association (BDA ), which allow the power of the DVD Forum, further undermining.

But even within the DVD Forum, there are interest groups that organize themselves in their own organizations, such as:

  • The RWPPI (for DVD -R and DVD -RW)
  • The RDVDC (for DVD -R, DVD -RW and DVD-RAM) or
  • The RAMPRG (DVD- RAM).

The DVD Forum has, in addition to the task of standardization of DVD formats, but also the rights to the DVD name and DVD logos. Only the DVD formats, which have been approved by the DVD Forum, may carry the DVD logo. Devices such as media must be compatible with each other carry the DVD logo.
