DVD RW Alliance

The DVD RW Alliance is an industry consortium that wanted to offer an inexpensive alternative to the then still quite expensive recordable DVD formats DVD -R and DVD -RW DVD Forum and therefore the alternative formats DVD R and DVD RW developed and promoted. The two alternative formats DVD R and DVD RW are also referred to as plus sizes.

Importance

Meanwhile, a price adjustment has taken place, the vast majority of manufacturers offer both media type DVD -R (W ) and DVD R ( W) at the same price. The two formats share the market of recordable DVDs without a clear favorite would be seen. For the consumer, the distinction between the plus and minus formats is usually irrelevant because modern DVD players read both DVD versions and very few devices can only DVD -R ( W) describe. Also regarding the licensing costs for manufacturers to use the various DVD standards, it came through the alternative formats to more reasonable licensing terms.

In contrast to the DVD Forum, the DVD RW Alliance developed its own DVD - successor, so that this organization will lose in the next few years dramatically in importance.
