The modern sports arena was built in 1999 and officially inaugurated with a friendly match between Wigan Athletic and Manchester United in August.

The first competitive match was held on August 7, as Wigan won a Division 2 match against Scunthorpe United 3-0, after 102 years, thus ending the era of Springfield Park, where the team ( until 1932 under the name of Wigan Borough ) had played their home games to date.

The first away win in the new stadium was accomplished expects Wigan Athletic, which formally held the Away status in an FA Cup match against Cambridge City, as the stadium of Cambridge was not suitable for the game.

The Wigan Warriors lost their first game in the new stadium on September 19, 1999 against the Castleford Tigers. 2001 was not a competitive match of Wigan Warriors lost in the stadium.
