Zwerggrundel ( Pandaka pygmaea )

The Zwerggrundel ( Pandaka pygmaea ) is one of the smallest fish in the world. Male Zwerggrundeln be only 0.9 to 1.1 cm long, females reach at least 1.5 cm.

Features

Head and neck of the Zwerggrundel are scaleless. There are four bands formed from individual dark spots on their body sides. With the exception of the pelvic fin bases are all fins are more pigmented.

Distribution and threat

The Zwerggrundel lives in fresh and brackish water in rivers, estuaries and mangrove areas in the Philippines ( Culion, Palawan ), Singapore and Indonesia (Bali, Sulawesi ). The population in the Philippines is now possibly extinct by pollution of the home waters. The IUCN lists the species as critically endangered ( " Critically Endangered ").
