Dwarf rabbit

Under dwarf rabbit in the sense of pedigree rabbits breeding is defined as a group of small ( dwarfish ) house rabbit breeds. They are not to be confused with the North American type dwarf rabbits ( Brachylagus idahoensis ). Dwarf rabbits are as pets, but also as a breed rabbits for exhibition purposes very popular.

The dwarf rabbit breeds include the following:

  • Ermine rabbit
  • Dwarf colors
  • Check dwarfs
  • Fuchs dwarf
  • Rexzwerge
  • Dwarf Lop
  • Jamora
  • Lion's head dwarfs
  • Teddy Dwarfs ( not recognized by ZDRK )
  • Teddy Aries (not recognized by the ZDRK )

Genetic peculiarities

Except for the Dwarf Lop all breeds carry the dwarf factor, which causes the typical body shape. The dwarf factor is lethal in its homozygous form, so that two dwarf rabbits should not be bred to each other ( torment breed ).
