Dwifungsi

Dwifungsi ( German double role, double function) describes the ideological basis of the military in Indonesia. The doctrine justified the activities of the armed forces outside the military field, as they also gave the military in addition to the national defense " socio- political " role.

Dwifungsi, initially developed as a " Middle Way" in the 1950s and 1960s to an officer's high school, sees the Indonesian military neither as a tool in the tradition of Western countries, even as the dominant figure in a military regime as in South American dictatorships, but as " people power ". With the takeover of Suharto in 1966 was Dwifungsi official policy. The military were assigned in state-owned enterprises, government and cabinet -making; political activity of officers was not only permitted but encouraged.

This dual role was not limited to the self-perception of the military, but was also supported by the population.

With the democratization of Indonesia Dwifungsi was officially abolished or limited. Nevertheless, the military is still a massive power factor moves away reluctant from his own position.
