Dwight Phillips

Dwight Phillips ( born October 1, 1977 in Decatur, Georgia) is an American athlete who specializes in the long jump. In this discipline, he was Olympic champion and four times world champion once.

Sports career

Phillips began as a sprinter, but soon moved to triple jump, in which he achieved a personal best of 16.41 meters in 1999, and the long jump. In the latter he qualified for the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, where he finished eighth. In 2003, he won gold in both the World Indoor Championships in Birmingham as well as at the World Championships in Paris. In 2004 he qualified as first the U.S. Trials for the Olympic Games in Athens, where he was charged with 8.59 m Olympic champion. At the World Championships in Helsinki in 2005, he defended his title at the 2007 World Championships in Osaka he won the bronze medal. At the World Championships in Berlin in 2009 and at the World Athletics Championships 2011 in Daegu, he won both times again the gold medal.

At the U.S. Trials 2008, Phillips failed to qualify for the Olympic Games in Beijing and fell hard to the qualification procedure of Americans to sacrifice in fourth.

With his personal best of 8.74 meters Phillips ranks along with Larry Myricks and Erick Walder to seventh place in the all world leaderboard (as of August 22, 2009 ).

Dwight Phillips is 1.82 meters tall and weighs 81 kg.
