Wide margin ( Dytiscus latissimus )

The wide rim or marginated beetle ( Dytiscus latissimus ) is a beetle of the family of diving beetles ( Dytiscidae ).

Features

The wide rim reaches a length from 36 to 44 mm, making it the largest member of the diving beetles in Europe. With its yellow edges and trained to swimming legs the center and rear legs, he has indeed on similarity to other Dytiscus species such as diving beetles, though characteristic distinguishing ability in addition to its size, the wing- like widened elytra.

Occurrence

Food

Food source for predatory species are mainly insects and carrion, but also sick fish are captured. Healthy fish are not part of the prey spectrum, since both adult animals and the larvae for hunting are too cumbersome.

Threats and conservation

The wide border has become very rare in many parts of Europe today, and is Germany's critically endangered ( Red List status 1). After 1980, only eight localities of the species are known.

The beetle is mainly threatened by excessive fish stocking and by Entkrautung, Gewässerverbau and nutrient inputs by fishing use.
