E. L. Doctorow

Edgar Lawrence Doctorow ( born January 6, 1931 in New York City ) is an American writer and journalist, who is considered one of the most important contemporary authors of the United States.

Life

Doctorow grew up as the child of Russian-Jewish immigrants of the second generation in the Bronx, New York. After his studies he published several magazines and has taught at various universities, since 1982 at New York University on a specially created for him Chair of English and American literature. Since 1984 he is member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters in New York. He received for his books almost all important national prizes and awards, including 1990 and 2006, the PEN / Faulkner Award. The PEN / Faulkner Award in 2006, endowed with 12,600 euros converted, he was awarded for the march. The novel is set in the closing months of the American Civil War and depicts the campaign of General William Tecumseh Sherman and his troops through the southern states Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina. In Germany Doctorow has been known primarily for his novels Ragtime and Billy Bathgate.
