E. Preston Ames

E. Preston Ames ( * June 15, 1906; † July 20, 1983 in Los Angeles, California ) was an American art director and production designer, who won the Oscar for Best Production Design twice.

Biography

Ames began in the mid 1940s his work as a production designer and art director in the film industry in Hollywood and in 1944 at The Caliph of Baghdad for the first time participated in equipping a film. Throughout his career, he was involved as a production designer in the creation of almost film and television productions.

At the Academy Awards in 1952 he received along with Cedric Gibbons, Edwin B. Willis and F. Keogh Gleason his first Oscar for Best Production Design in the color film An American in Paris ( 1951).

Other Oscar nominations for Best Production Design followed in 1954 with C. Gibbons, Edward C. Carfagno, Gabriel Scoganmillo, EB Willis, F.K. Gleason and Jack D. Moore for the color film, it was the great love? ( The Story of Three Loves, 1953), 1955 C. Gibbons, EB Willis and F.K. Gleason for the color film Brigadoon (1954 ) and 1957 together with C. Gibbons, Hans O. Peters and FK Gleason for the color film Vincent Van Gogh - A life of passion (1956).

His second Oscar in the category Best Production Design, he won at the Academy Awards in 1959 along with William A. Horning, Henry Grace and FK Gleason for Gigi (1958).

After that Ames was still nominated three more times for the Academy Award for Best Production Design and indeed in 1965 with George W. Davis, Henry Grace and Hugh Hunt for the color film Gold Diggers Molly (1964 ), 1971 with Alexander Golitzen, Jack D. Moore and Mickey S. Michaels for Airport ( 1970) and 1975 A. Golitzen and Frank R. McKelvy for earthquake (1974).

Most recently, he was nominated in 1983 by Bill Harp for an Emmy for the most outstanding features in a television series, and indeed for the episode " Jenny " of the National Broadcasting Company ( NBC) produced five -part TV series Casablanca ( 1983).

Ames, who also built the equipment for episodes of television series such as Bonanza ( 1971-1972 ), worked with film directors such as Vincente Minnelli, Gottfried Reinhardt, Charles Walters, George Seaton and Mark Robson.
