E. S. Johnny Walker

ES Johnny Walker ( born June 18, 1911 in Fulton, Fulton County, Kentucky, † October 8, 2000 in Albuquerque, New Mexico ) was an American politician. Between 1965 and 1969 he represented the second electoral district of the state of New Mexico in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Early years and political rise

Johnny Walker attended the public schools of his home in 1926 and moved with his family to Albuquerque in New Mexico. There he attended the High School and the University of New Mexico. Walker finished his studies at the George Washington University in Washington. During the Second World War he served as a soldier in the U.S. Army in North Africa and Europe.

Walker was a member of the Democratic Party. Between 1949 and 1952 he was a delegate in the House of Representatives from New Mexico. There he supported the successful bill, which gave women the right to act as jurors in court. From 1953-1956 and 1961-1964 was Walker Head of the management of public property (State Land Office ) of the State of New Mexico. In addition, he was in 1960 head of the tax authority.

In the congressional elections of 1964, Walker was elected for the second district of New Mexico in the U.S. House of Representatives. There he took over from the January 3, 1965 Joseph Montoya, who had previously been elected to the U.S. Senate. In Congress, Walker was a member of the Armed Services Committee and promoted the establishment of the Pecos National Monument. After a re-election in 1966, he was able to complete two Legislatureperioden in Congress. In 1968 he defeated Ed Foreman, who had already represented the State of Texas 1963-1965 in the U.S. House of Representatives. One reason for Walker's election defeat was a change in the electoral boundaries in New Mexico to his disadvantage. His advocacy for tougher gun laws and the closure of Walker Air Force Base, an air base near Roswell, cost him crucial votes in this region.

After the end of his career in Congress, Walker drew largely withdrew from politics. Although he was more interested in political events, but more a candidate for no other office. Johnny Walker died in October 2000 at the age of 89 years in Albuquerque.
