Eadfrith of Lindisfarne

Eadfrith of Lindisfarne (also Edfrid; † 721 ) was an Anglo-Saxon saint and from 698 until his death, Bishop of Lindisfarne.

Life

About Eadfriths early years nothing is known.

After he was ordained a bishop 698, Eadfrith supported the cult Cuthbert and let 699-705 create a hagiography by an anonymous author. To 720 he induced the Venerable Bede the book on to revise " The life of the Holy Father Cuthbert " and write a poetry and a prose version.

An Epilogue in the Lindisfarne Gospels from the 10th century expressed that Eadfrith the factory has written as a writer and illustrator " with his own hand ." The elaborate work was the opinion of several historians before his tenure as bishop, while other historians regard it as a commission Eadfriths. Still others hold his involvement in the work as a whole for an unbelievable tradition.

Eadfrith built the dilapidated hermitage Cuthberts on the Farne islands new, which was inhabited at that time by the hermit Felgild.

Eadfrith died in the year 721

His feast day is June 4.
