Talarion is an unmanned aircraft manufacturer Cassidian, the part of the German armor division of EADS. The drone represents the flying platform of a military reconnaissance system for medium heights ( MALE ) dar. The name Talarion refers to the wings on the sandals of the god Hermes.

Task and development

EADS designs, with technological input of TAI ( TUSAS Aerospace Industries), the unmanned aircraft at the request of Germany, France and Spain, who sought an education system. According to the tender, all available on the market drones did not come into question. So called for the tender that the system should be twin engine, in order to in the event of a failure of a drive continue to exercise his duty or return to the base can. Various monitoring systems should operate simultaneously and collectively to obtain combined data, for example, optical, and infrared cameras. After a 15-month risk reduction study, funded by the three principal countries, EADS presented at the Paris Air Show 2009 in front of a first model of Talarion. A prototype was not funded by the three countries. An exclusive financing through the German federal budget failed so far also. On January 20, 2012, Cassidian and Rheinmetall announced to bring their drones business in a joint venture. Cassidian pursue now the development of Talarion no longer actively. However, technologies for future drones will be further developed.

Technical Equipment

The drone is similar in appearance through the front radome of the U.S. drone " Reaper" and the British prototype BAE Mantis. However Talarion has a much broader and deeper hull than this and at the base of the rudder two jet engines. The wings are unswept and having a high aspect ratio. Talarion is equipped with a radar AESA under the hull and behind it with a powerful electro-optic and IR sensor. A modular design makes different configurations are possible.
