The opening of the station took place on July 1, 1879 by the Metropolitan District Railway (MDR, the predecessor company of the District Line ), as part of the distance between Turnham Green and Ealing Broadway. From 1886 to March 1, 1910, the station name was meanwhile Ealing Common & West Acton.

On June 28, 1903, the MDR opened an extension north to the Station Park Royal & Twyford Abbey, which was five days later extended to South Harrow. This new track was - together with the already existing tracks between Ealing Common and Acton Town - the first electrified underground rail line, the Underground. On July 4, 1932, the Piccadilly Line was extended beyond its previous endpoint Hammersmith out and took over the route between Ealing Common and South Harrow on the District Line. Since then run the District trains only to Ealing Broadway.

The building, designed by Charles Holden buildings corresponds in style to those of the Morden extension of the City and South London Railway ( now part of the Northern Line ). It consists of Portland stone and has a high heptagonal ticket hall with windows on all sides. The new building was opened on 1 March 1931.
