Eames House

The Eames House is a Grade II listed house, which was built by the architect Charles Eames and his wife Ray in 1949 as part of the Case Study Houses program, the magazine Arts & Architecture as their private residence. This also Case Study House No. 8 called home is in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles, near the Pacific coast.

Development

The concept of Eames saw before a house that was suitable for living and working. From 1945 worked Eames and his wife in the design, even with the help of Eero Saarinen - with him she also designed furniture and participated jointly in design competitions. The plan was a straightforward construction, which was supported by a steel structure and had large areas of glass in the facade. Important was the Eames that all structural parts were to relate as standard modules from the range of metal dealers. However, raw materials were not available in sufficient quantities in the period immediately after the Second World War, so it took three years until all the parts were delivered. During this waiting period, the Eames changed their plans several times. The 5.10 meter high facade is divided into several rectangular areas, which - similar to the works of Piet Mondrian - are decorated in color. The surfaces are interrupted by the thin, black-painted steel beams. A row of eucalyptus trees that were already on the sloping south plot, form a contrast to the facade.

On the north-western neighboring property Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen built at the same time in 1949 completed Entenza House (Case Study House # 9) for the editor of the Case Study program.
