Ear training

Ear training is an area of music education. It refers to the process in which the ear is trained to determine intervals, pitches and rhythms. The ear training is a necessary condition for concert musician, music teacher, conductor and musicologist.

At Musikhochschulen the melody dictation is a prerequisite to pass the entrance exams. A polyphonic set must be listed as error- free after the audition on the piano here. Since 2010, this traditional practice is questioned in the light of the emerging requirement for a competency-based delivery of content both in schools and at music colleges and universities. Likewise, ear training is an integral part of the Baccalaureate in Music Performance course some states.

At first you train your ear, intervals to determine successively and simultaneously. Rhythm dictations and listening to sound sequences lead to the melody dictation. In the advanced stage polyphonic settings can be recorded. It is possible to get determined by appropriate computer programs many tasks.

Furthermore includes ear training and the acquisition of various chord groups. In advanced stages, even complex multi- sounds and tone clusters can be determined.

The ear training is not about the perfect listening to complex chords or intervals at great speed, but to recognize relationships in music ( tonal or atonal ), as is required in practice about while conducting an orchestra.
