Earl of Dundonald

Earl of Dundonald is a hereditary British title of nobility in the Peerage of Scotland, which is supported by the Cochrane family. It is named after the village of Dundonald, South Ayrshire, Scotland.

Ancestral homes of the family are Lochnell Castle in Oban, Argyll and Bute and Beacon Hall at Cranbrook, Kent, England.

Award

The title was awarded to the deserving military Sir William Cochrane in 1669.

Subordinate title

Subordinate title of Earl of Dundonald are Lord Cochrane of Dundonald ( created 1647) and Lord Cochrane of Paisley and Ochiltree ( created 1669). These titles, which also belong to the peerage of Scotland, baronies are comparable in the other British peerages.

Another title

The tenth Earl, a famous naval officer who fought in several wars of liberation against colonial powers, was raised in 1823 by Emperor Dom Pedro I of Brazil to the Marquis of Maranhao.
