Earl of Eldon

Earl of Eldon, in the County Palatine of Durham, is a British hereditary title of nobility in the Peerage of the United Kingdom.

Award

The title was in 1821, awarded to the lawyer and politician John Scott, who held the office of Lord Chancellor from 1801 to 1806 and from 1807 to 1827.

Subordinate title

The earldom was also the title of Viscount Encombe, of Encombe in the County of Dorset, loaned, which also belongs to the peerage of the United Kingdom. He is led by the heirs title as a courtesy title.

In 1799, John Scott the title Baron Eldon, Eldon was of in the County Palatine of Durham, granted. This title belongs to the peerage of Great Britain.

William Scott, 1st Baron Stowell, was the elder brother of the first Earl of Eldon.
