Earl of Kildare

Earl of Kildare is a hereditary title of nobility in the Peerage of Ireland.

Award

The title was awarded on May 14, 1316 by King Edward II to John FitzThomas FitzGerald, the eldest son of Thomas, Lord Offaly.

The tenth Earl was convicted in 1537 and forfeited the title. 1554 of the title Earl of Kildare was awarded a second time, namely the title heirs of the tenth Earl. 1569 the original title of the 1316 has been restored. The eleventh Earl had thus two titles patents. 1599 went out the 1554 title would lend to the death of the 13th Earl, in 1316, awarded the title existed, however, continue.

The 20th Earl of title Marquess of Kildare, and in 1766 the title of Duke of Leinster was awarded in 1761. The title Earl of Kildare was now a subordinate title.
