Earl of Lauderdale

Earl of Lauderdale is a hereditary British title of nobility in the Peerage of Scotland.

Historical family home of the Earls of Lauderdale was Thirlestane Castle, near Lauder in Scotland. Currently inhabited Thirlestane Castle of Gerald Maitland - Carew and his family. Maitland - Carew is the grandson of the 15th Earl of Lauderdale.

The Earl of Lauderdale, the Bearer of the National Flag of Scotland, an office within the Royal Household in Scotland. He thus has the right to wear the Royal Scottish flag in procession in front of the British monarch.

Award

The title Earl of Lauderdale in 1624 was John Maitland, 2nd Lord Maitland of Thirlestane awarded. His son, the second Earl, in 1672 the title of Duke of Lauderdale was awarded. However, since he died without an heir, went out the duke and earldom passed to his brother Charles.

Subordinate title

Subordinate title of Earls are Viscount of Lauderdale ( 1616), Viscount of Maitland ( 1624), Lord Maitland of Thirlestane (1590) and Lord Thirlestane and Boulton ( 1624). All these titles are in the Peerage of Scotland. The title Viscount Maitland is led by the heirs title as a courtesy title. Use is also the title of Master of Lauderdale.
