Earl of Lichfield

Earl of Lichfield is a hereditary British title of nobility in the Peerage of the United Kingdom, named after the city of Lichfield in England, which is now supported by the Anson family. He has previously been awarded twice in the Peerage of England.

Ancestral home of the family is Shugborough Hall in Stafford, Staffordshire, around 20 km from Lichfield.

Ceremonies

The title was awarded a total of three times. The first ceremony took place in 1645 during the English Civil War by King Charles II to Charles Stewart, whose family had supported the king in many battles of the Civil War. This drowned in 1672 in Denmark, where he had been sent as ambassador, he left without male descendants. The title became extinct therefore.

Two years later the title of Sir Edward Henry Lee, Bt has been awarded, who was married to an illegitimate daughter of the king of the relationship with Barbara Villiers. Meanwhile, the last male descendant died in 1776.

1806 the great-nephew of the famous Admiral George Anson and Seekriegstheoretikers the title of Viscount Anson was awarded. His son, Thomas William Anson, 2nd Viscount Anson was levied on the occasion of the coronation of William IV in 1831 to the Earl of Lichfield.

Subordinate title

As a subordinate title of the Earl of Lichfield now leads the title Viscount Anson, of Shugborough and Orgrave in the Couny of Suffolk, and Baron Soberton, Soberton of in the County of Southampton. Both are also included in the Peerage of the United Kingdom and was created in 1806.

The heir takes the courtesy title Viscount Anson.

Presumptive heir ( Heir Presumptive ) is the great-nephew of the fourth Earl, George Rupert Anson ( b. 1960 ), followed by his eldest son, Rupert Douglas (* 1992).
