Earl of Rosebery

Earl of Rosebery is a hereditary British title of nobility in the Peerage of Scotland, which is supported by the family Primrose.

Ancestral home of the family is Dalmeny House Dalmeny, Scotland and until 1977 also Mentmore Towers, Mentmore, Buckinghamshire.

Award

The title was 1703 Archibald Primrose, a senior member of the first Scottish and 1707 the House of Lords awarded. This was three years before been raised to the Viscount of Rosebery, with a special note that the title should be no male heir be present, can also be inherited in the female line.

One of his descendants, Archibald Philip Primrose, 5th Earl of Rosebery served as Foreign Minister, Lord Privy Seal, Minister of the United Kingdom and Lord President of the Council.

The Earl of Rosebery carries the subordinate title Viscount of Rosebery ( created 1700), Viscount of Inverkeithing ( created 1703), Viscount Mentmore, of Mentmore in Buckinghamshire ( created 1911), Lord Primrose and Dalmeny, ( created 1700), Lord Dalmeny ( created 1703), Baron Rosebery, Rosebery in the county of Edinburgh ( created 1828) and Baron Epsom, Epsom of in the county of Surrey ( created 1911). The title Viscount Mentmore, Baron and Baron Rosebery Epsom are in the Peerage of the United Kingdom, the other title in the Peerage of Scotland.

1911 the fifth Earl of Rosebery the title Earl of Midlothian was also awarded in the Peerage of the United Kingdom.

The aforementioned special Erbregelung also applies to the same time conferred title of Lord Primrose and Dalmeny.

The heir of the respective Earls usually bears the courtesy title of Lord Dalmeny. The present Earl was wearing while he was Erbanwärter his father, the sixth Earl, exceptionally, the courtesy title of Lord Primrose. Otherwise, he would have worn the same title as his older half- brother Archbald Ronald Primrose, who had led the title of Lord Dalmeny until his death in 1931. The current title contender again bears the courtesy title of Lord Dalmeny.
