Anthony Ashley -Cooper, 1st Earl of Shaftesbury

Earl of Shaftesbury is a hereditary British title of nobility in the Peerage of England, named after the town of Shaftesbury in Dorset, which is supported by the family Ashley -Cooper.

Ancestral home of the family (sometimes called Ashley House ) at Wimborne St Giles in Dorset St. Giles House.

Award

The title was in 1672 in the influential British politician Anthony Ashley -Cooper, 1st Baron Ashley awarded. This was partly responsible for the return of Charles II from exile to England and then had more than 10 years the office of Chancellor of the Exchequer held. Later he was then, among other things Lord Chancellor.

Subordinate title

The first Earl had been in 1661 in the County of Dorset, raised to Baron Ashley of Wimborne St Giles. Simultaneously with the earldom of the title of Baron Cooper of Paullet was in the County of Somerset awarded. Both titles are in the Peerage of England and are now managed by the respective Earl as subordinate title.

The heir takes the courtesy title of Baron Ashley.

The father of the first Earl had been a baronet in 1622, of Rock Bourne in the County of Southampton, collected. This title, which belongs to the Baronetage of England will be borne by the respective Earl.
