Earl of Shrewsbury

Earl of Shrewsbury is a British hereditary title of nobility, named after the town of Shrewsbury, Shropshire, which is now supported by the Talbot family. The title was previously awarded twice in the Peerage of England. It is the oldest earldom, which is performed as the primary title. The more ancient title of Earl of Arundel bears the Duke of Norfolk.

The family seat was formerly Alton Towers, until it was sold to the Tussauds Group. Today it is Wanfield Hall in Staffordshire.

Ceremonies

The first award went to Roger II de Montgomery one of the most important adviser of William the Conqueror. The title was drafted in 1102, when the 3rd Earl, Robert of Belleme rebelled against Henry I and the invasion of Normandy Roberts joined. These Earls of Shrewsbury also sometimes referred to as Earl of Shropshire.

The title was created in 1442 for John Talbot, an English general of the Hundred Years' War a second time.

More titles

The first Earl of the second ceremony had from his ancestors already the title Baron Talbot ( created 1331 ) and Baron Strange of Blackmere ( created in 1309 ) inherited, both in the Peerage of England. He was appointed in 1446 to the Earl of Waterford in the Peerage of Ireland, and hereditary Lord High Steward of Ireland. The two Earls Would now form a human unit. The dignity of the Earl of Waterford is sometimes Premier Earldom of Ireland on the roll called, as the oldest title of the Earl of Kildare, is worn as a subordinate title of Duke of Leinster.

The son of the first Earl inherited from his mother in 1295 created the dignity of Baron Furnivall, which became after the death of the first Earl of subordinate title of the earldom.

After the death of the sixth Earl, who had three daughters but no son, were the three old baronies in the floating ( engl. "into abeyance " ), while the two Earls Would went over to the younger brother.

The 12th Earl was an important politician of his time. He was raised in 1694 to the Duke of Shrewsbury and Marquess of Alton. Both titles extinguished when he died in 1718 without a male descendant.

Both stocks fell in 1860 after a long and costly litigation to a branch of the family, has already led the title Earl Talbot and Viscount Ingestre, both from 1784, as well as Baron Talbot of Hensol ( created 1733). These all belong to the peerage of Great Britain.

At the coronation of British monarchs of the Earl of Shrewsbury must carry as Lord High Steward of Ireland a white rod. The heir takes the courtesy title Viscount Ingestre.
