The title was created a total of five times. For the first time this happened in 1138 in favor of Waleran de Beaumont, Count of Meulan, son of Robert de Beaumont, Count of Meulan and 1st Earl of Leicester, and twin brother of Robert de Beaumont, 2nd Earl of Leicester, but the county in clashes the time of King Stephen could not keep.

A second ceremony was not until over 200 years later in 1397 to Thomas Percy, to whom the title was, however, denied six years later. He had participated in the rebellion of his nephew Henry Percy against King Henry IV.

1420 followed the next ceremony, this time to Richard Beauchamp, but he died two years later without a male heir.

The title was created in 1456 for John Tiptoft for the fourth time. This held many high offices of state, especially that of the Lord High Treasurer. The title became extinct in 1485, when the second Earl died childless.

The fifth award is that which exists today. It took place in 1514 to Charles Somerset, a son of Henry Beaufort, 3rd Duke of Somerset. Beaufort was as Lord Chamberlain of the Household, a close confidant of King Heirich VIII.
