Early Pleistocene

The Lower Pleistocene, and Early Pleistocene or Altdiluvium, called in the marine area Calabrium, is the longest section of the geological epoch of the Pleistocene. It began about 1.806 million years ago and ended about 0.781 million years ago with the beginning of the Middle Pleistocene and lasted for approximately 1.025 million years.

Naming

The Lower Pleistocene is likely to be called in the future " Calabrium ". In addition, the top step of the Pliocene, the Gelasian, was transferred to the Pleistocene, and thus the Quaternary, so that the Early Pleistocene in the future will be as Calabrium the second stage of the Pleistocene. A Global Stratotype Section and Point ( GSSP, is about one type profile ) has not yet been determined.

Definition

The lower limit is just above the top of the magnetic polarity chronozone C2n ( Olduvai chronozone ) and calcareous nannoplankton Aussterbehorizont the -art Discoaster brouweri ( = base of the calcareous nannoplankton Zone CN13 ). In addition, falls the base to the first appearance of calcareous nannoplankton - form Gephyrocapsa spp. and the Aussterbehorizont of planktonic foraminifera species Globigerinoides extremus together. The upper limit is defined by the Brunhes Matuyama reversal of the magnetic field of the earth.
