Earthquake Early Warning (Japan)

Under earthquake early warning (Japanese紧急 地震 速 报, kinkyū jishin sokuhō ) refers to a system used in Japan, the Japan Meteorological Agency ( JMA ), the informed immediately after the occurrence of significant earthquakes in seismically active zones affected areas of potential hazards. For all areas potentially affected alerts via vibrations are distributed via television, radio or your own receivers, so that the population still can adjust within a few seconds on the approaching earthquake as possible.

In addition to the JMA earthquake early warning system, there are other systems, including in Japan UrEDAS from tetsudō Soken the former state railway for today's JR companies or Sistemas de Alerta Sísmica (SAS ) in Mexico or QuakeGuard in some regions of the United States.

Commissioning

On 1 October 2007 the JMA established the system for the public and disseminated information on the behavior when warnings occur. It should be noted that, at best, a few seconds up to a few tens of seconds before the first local vibrations can be given a warning; the areas in close spatial proximity to the epicenter can thereby be shaken before the arrival of the warnings.

The early warning time depends on the distance of the affected region on the earthquake center. Seismic waves propagate at different speeds, primary waves faster than the more hazardous secondary waves. This skew is the maximum achievable warning time dar. If the time differences are evaluated by seismometers can locate the epicenter within the measurement accuracies and project the spread of the quake.

The system is linked to the tsunami early warning system in Japan.

Benefit

In addition to personal protection that the Pre- Warned can establish itself immediately, the system should enable especially, machine operator in the position to minimize the risk of serious damages to persons and property. For example, by bus and train drivers and motorists reduce speed, educators and supervisors to guide and inform persons entrusted. Risky work, such as operations, as well as heavy machinery can be stopped and interrupted at best.
