East Liverpool is a city in Columbiana County, Ohio, United States. At the 2000 census, the city had 13,089 inhabitants. It is located on the Ohio River and borders the states of Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Due to the decline of the pottery industry took its population between 1980 and 2000 from around 4000 inhabitants.

History

The area was before the arrival of European settlers tribal area of various Iroquois tribes. The city's history begins with the acquisition of land by the Land Act by Isaac Craig in 1796. Initially called the resulting settlement on St. Clair, in honor of Arthur St. Clair, governor of the Northwest Territory. By Craig Thomas Fawcett acquired on July 1, 1800 was the first European country, settling on the current municipal area. At first the place was commonly called after its founder only Fawcettstown. The present city name he owes an English potter who named the place Liverpool. However, there was already a second Liverpool in Ohio in Medina County, so the settlement was renamed in 1834 in East Liverpool.

Due to the presence of yellow clay in the vicinity of the town was the pottery in the early years and then one of the main industries. Around 1880, the city claimed the status, the largest pottery in the world, the firm Knowles, Taylor & Knowles Pottery to host. The sound, however, was imported at that time from other states, because the passage of time white crockery had the yellow displaced. Due to the large number of potteries East Liverpool also got the nickname Crockery City ( pottery town ). To date, the pottery is the most important business branch of the city.

East Liverpool is home to a campus of Kent State University with a focus on computer technology, occupational therapy and physiotherapy.

Personalities

East Liverpool is the home town of the former University of Notre Dame football coach Lou Holtz.

In the 1920s, the bank robber Pretty Boy Floyd lived in East Liverpool. He was also shot by one of his bank robberies by the police. The grave of the bank robber is located in the city.
