East Side/West Side

East Side / West Side is an American television series that ran on CBS in the years 1963-1964. Produced the series by David Susskind. Protagonists are the social worker Neil Brock, played by George C. Scott, his secretary January Foster, played by Cicely Tyson and the head of the authority, Frieda Hechlinger, played by Elizabeth Wilson. The fact that a black Cycely Tyson was cast in a starring role in a television series, was unusual for its time.

In the one-hour episodes of the drama series issues such as poverty, prejudice, drugs, abortion and the death penalty to be treated. On November 4, 1964 episode aired, in which the infant dies of a young black couple living in poverty in Harlem after a rat bite. The episode led to articles in leading newspapers and Republican Senator Jacob Javits praised CBS for having the courage to broadcast this episode, saying the series deal honestly and sensitively with the central problems of employment discrimination, housing conditions and the deep divide that between blacks and whites rule. Even though the show was well received, it was a failure for CBS, because it could not be to sell a third of the advertising time. So it was discontinued after one year and 26 episodes.

The first episode ran on September 30, 1963, the last on September 14, 1964. Broadcast was on Mondays at 22.00 clock.
