East St. Louis is a city in St. Clair County in the western part of the U.S. state of Illinois. In 2000, East St. Louis 31,542 inhabitants; until the official estimate in 2009, the population was reduced to 28,753.

East St. Louis is located across from St. Louis ( Missouri) on the east bank of the Mississippi River. The city is located in the Metro East -called eastern, located in Illinois and thus in the east of the Mississippi part of the metropolitan region of Greater St. Louis.

East St. Louis is one of the poorer cities in Illinois. The decline of heavy industry has caused high unemployment. The population of the city is now mostly ( 97.74 %) African-American ethnicity.
