East Timorese parliamentary election, 2001

The first parliamentary elections in East Timor were carried out on 30 August 2001. The country was at that time still under the management of UNTAET, since international troops had taken control of the Indonesian occupation. Parliament received its full sovereignty with East Timor's independence on 20 May 2002. Since it was the first parliamentary elections were a total of 88 seats to be allocated including 13 seats for representatives directly elected in the districts. Election winner was the party that led the majority of resistance to the Indonesian occupation and had already in 1975 proclaimed the independence of East Timor, FRETILIN. She received 55 seats, including 12 district representatives. Only in Oecussi- Ambena won the independent candidate António Lelan the direct mandate.
