The Olympic Village (english Olympic Village ) is a housing estate in London. It is located in the district of Stratford (London Borough of Newham ), in the northeastern part of the Olympic Park. During the 2012 Olympic Games and the Paralympic Summer Games 2012 live here most of the athletes and coaches. 1908 and 1948, when in London also took place Olympic Games, there were no Olympic Villages; the athletes were living in hotels and schools.

Project Development

In May 2008, the Australian company Lend Lease Group received from the Planning Authority Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA ) contract to build the Olympic Village. Various media, upon hearing this business cronyism, as the incumbent until 2011 ODA chairman David Higgins was formerly CEO of Lend Lease. On the site was previously located predominantly untapped industrial wasteland. In May 2008, construction began. 28 buildings had to be demolished, including a cold storage and two twelve-story high-rise buildings of the University of East London.

Originally Lend Lease did not want to just build the Olympic Village, but largely finance themselves and then sell the homes at a profit. However, as a result of the global economic crisis, the company could not raise enough capital to pre-finance the 1.1 billion -pound construction projects. In May 2009, the British state had to step in and take over cost. Overall, the public sector paid 750 million pounds, another 168 million were borrowed from banks ( including the European Investment Bank ) and 179 million came together through cost savings. In August 2011, the ODA sold the Olympic Village for 557 million pounds to the real estate company of the ruling family of Qatar; for taxpayers resulted in a loss of 275 million pounds.

On 27 January 2012, the Olympic Village was handed over to the organizing committee LOCOG, after which it established the completed building for the needs of the athletes. While the games are 17,320 beds for athletes and support available. All apartments are equipped with television, internet access and Wi-Fi. There are also various shops, leisure facilities and medical facilities. In the central dining room at the same time can be catered for 5500 people.

After the games, and the subsequent conversions will be the total 2818 apartments. Of these, 1439 sold as condominiums and 1379 rented to social conditions. The settlement will also daycare, include a health center, 10 acres of green space and a school complex for 1800 students. The settlement will get the name Chobham Manor, named after an estate that existed at this place from the 14th to the 19th century.
