Eastern Province, Rwanda

The Eastern Province ( in Kinyarwanda Intara y'Iburasirazuba, French Province de l ' Est, Eng. Eastern Province ) is a province of Rwanda. It was made with the introduction of a new management structure on 1 January 2006 from the former provinces Kibungo and Umutara, the largest part of Kigali Rural, and a part of Byumba. The Eastern Province consists of the seven districts of Bugesera, Gatsibo, Kayonza, Kirehe, Ngoma, Nyagatare and Rwamagana. Its capital is Rwamagana.

Geography

More cities will be Umutara and Kibungo. The Eastern Province is bordered on the north by Uganda, to the east by Tanzania, and on the south by Burundi.

The terrain rises from south to north. The Akagera Nile flows through the province, forming the east, the border with Tanzania.

  • Gisaka Lakes: Birara, Lake Mugesera, sake
  • In Nasho Basin: Cyambwe Lake, Mpanga, Nasho Lake
  • Akagera National Park: Ihema Lake, Kivumba, Hago, Mihindi, Rwanyakizinga
  • In the Central Highlands: Muhazi

Economy

The most important source of income of the population is agriculture and animal husbandry, from the latter in particular dairy farming. The production of processed products from the agricultural produce cassava and bananas should be encouraged. The biggest problem of agriculture in the province is drought in the northern part and erosion.

Soon all the districts to be supplied with electricity. Attractive to tourists is the Akagera National Park.
