The term Eastern Switzerland ( Romansch Romansch Romansch or Orientala da l' ost, Italian Svizzera orientale ) is the lying in the north- east and south-east cantons of Switzerland.
These include, according to the Federal Statistical Office, the cantons of Glarus, Schaffhausen, Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Appenzell Innerrhoden, St. Gallen, Graubünden and Thurgau.
Not clear is the view which the Canton of Zurich concerns: Many residents west of Zurich include the Canton of Zurich for eastern Switzerland. The above cantons, however, want to deliberately differentiate Zurich from eastern Switzerland, in order not to give the impression that the rather unpopular in eastern Switzerland Zurich is the "capital" of eastern Switzerland. The Zurich themselves are generally not Eastern. Winterthur is sometimes referred to as a western terminus of Eastern Switzerland.
In the canton of Grisons, there are also different opinions: While some count him to Eastern Switzerland, to see him other than distinct region; the Grisons count yourself not amongst them. Also seen politically not part of the Canton of Graubünden to Eastern Switzerland, both in the media and colloquial. Graubünden and Glarus and the southern part of the canton of St. Gallen ( Gaster / lake district, Sarganserland / Walen ) belong to the so-called South-Eastern Switzerland, a term that has only existed for a few years.
Although there are different inter-cantonal concordats between the canton of Schaffhausen and the other cantons of eastern Switzerland, the Canton of Schaffhausen feels economy and transportation infrastructure rather attracted to the Canton of Zurich. This is certainly connected with the fact that the transport links by road and rail are much better developed in the cities of Winterthur and Zurich as to Frauenfeld and St. Gallen.
