Eastern Upper Lusatia

The Eastern Upper Lusatia is a natural area in Saxony and in the broader sense, part of the Western Sudetes. The current Saxon natural space planning assigns the African regional scale to the Saxon Lössgefilde and twelve different subspaces in the rank of Mesogeochoren.

In a north-south direction, the Eastern Upper Lusatia extends between the cities of Görlitz and Zittau. To the north it borders on the Upper Lusatian Heath and Pond area, on the south by the Zittau mountains, on the west by the Oberlausitzer climes and the Upper Lusatian Mountains. The eastern part is separated by the Lusatian Neisse River and is located in Poland. Sub-units with special mastocytosis are Königshainer mountains, the Neißetal and mining landscapes south of Görlitz and Zittau in the pool.

The natural area is varied and characterized by the juxtaposition of mountain groups, individual mountains, plates and pelvis. Glacial moraines and meltwater sand and about overlapping loess fill the granite relief from in varying widths. The loess is generally only about 1 to 1.5 m thick. As witnesses of the Tertiary volcanic effusions are found blankets and single mountains from basalts and phonolites. In Zittau and Oderwitz pool, as well as in Berzdorfer pool carries significant trapped in sediments deposits of lignite.
